Fibroid is a non-cancerous tumor that grows inside the uterus (womb) as the smooth muscle and fibrous tissues grow and turn into fibroids which are different in size. Some patients have it of a bean size and some may have it of a large melon size. Sometimes the malignant grows inside the womb, but this is not very common.
Almost all the researchers believe that there are two major causes of this problem;
Its growth is directly linked with the levels of estrogen and progesterone. When these two things increase their levels, fibroids also increase their size, but automatically get decreased when they are decreased.
This disease also spreads through family members like mother to daughter.
It is very difficult for the patients to know if they have this issue or not. Its symptoms may include the following;
- The women may experience problems in fertility, pregnancy, labor and may have repeated miscarriages.
- Pain in backbone
- Pain and swelling in lower abdomen
- Difficulty and irritation in urination
- Abnormal periods
- Feeling weakness in legs
- Sometimes feeling pain in the whole body
Now many methods have been developed to diagnose fibroids and by using latest methods and devices, a doctor can easily examine and ensure whether the patient has fibroids or not. The most common methods for examination are as follows;
1 – Ultrasound
Ultrasound is used to check the fibroids in womb.
2 – Trans-Vaginal Scan
Patient’s vagina is examined closely by entering a small device in it.
3 – Hysteroscopy
This device examines the inner side of the uterus.
4 – Laparoscopy
This device helps the doctor to check the shape and size of fibroids.
5 – Biopsy
Biopsy technique is used to study the lining of uterus under a microscope.
Researches show that in many cases, this disease does not create problems for the patients, but some of them get problems and their lives get so disturbed. Here are some problems that may occur.
I – Abnormal Periods
Due to heavy periods, it is very difficult for the affected woman to perform her daily duties properly which becomes the cause of depression later.
II – Abdominal Pains
Thepatient feels pain in lower side of abdomen if her fibroids are of large size.
III – Maternity Problems
Some women may experience maternity problems.
IV – Infertility
Sometimes fibroids growth creates complications for women to become pregnant.
V – Leiomyosarcoma
It is a type of cancer and developed in fibroids; however, it is very rare.
Researchers suggest that if fibroids are not disturbing patient’s day-to-day life, she should avoid any treatments such as if a woman is facing heavy periods but her life is not disturbed, she does not need treatment. If she is feeling weakness and her life is getting disturbed, she should take it seriously and go to a good doctor for its timely treatment which might be in form of medication or surgery.
Women can’t control this disease just by changing their food habits or lifestyles. If any woman feels that she has symptoms of fibroids, she has to go to doctor for a complete checkup to get it diagnosed so that a timely treatment can be initiated.
