What Are Drill Bits Used For?

For the workers, a drill bit is the steel needle attached to the drill. It is the part of the drill that rotates and penetrates the material.  The rest of the drill body can be made of metal or plastic. The drill bit is hence the part of the drill that actually does the work, cutting and twisting its way deep into a material, yielding a hole.

Parts

They comprise of four parts; the shank, tip, lip, and the flute. The tip, as the name points out, is the end of the bit that penetrates into the material first. The shank is the opposite end attached to the drill. The grooves along the bit are known as the flute, which helps to remove material excavated during the drilling. The lip is the cutting edge, the part which has to do most of the work, and hence suffers the most collateral damage. Other structural features that are important for its functionality include the lip angle and the point angle. The point angle, as its name suggests, is a feature of the tip, and imparts more penetrating power as it is increased. The lip angle likewise affects the cutting power of the device.

Core Material

The core material used to make these bits is steel, which can vary in its strength depending on its carbon content. Greater the carbon content of the steel, greater is its strength, stronger is its penetrating power. Other than steel, various other metals like chromium and vanadium are also used to bolster the strength of the drill bit. Apart from structural composition, they are also often coated with a material that imparts resistance to these steel rods. The resistance can be from heat, corrosion, or simply the damage incurred during its usage. The simplest coating used is that of black oxide, which imparts a somewhat heat resistance, and can allow it to be able to live longer. Titanium coating goes one step further, and has a much better performance than the black oxide coating in terms of resistance and longer life. But what trumps both the black oxide and titanium coating is the cobalt coating. It is extremely resistance, increasing the life of the rod manifold, but comes with a steep price that may be beyond the reach of most workers.
